Kull 5 – The Wish 2 B litter

18 July 2026 – Two males

There was also a female puppy who sadly had to be put to sleep shortly after birth due to a cleft palate.

This litter was born on day 61 after insemination with frozen semen. Labour came to a halt after the two male puppies were born, and we had to go to the vet, where Wish was given calcium and two injections of oxytocin. Sadly, the last puppy was born with a cleft palate.

About the Litter

This litter consisted of just two lovely boys, both of whom I decided to keep at home. I am very excited to see how they develop!

Wish was inseminated with Buck-Owens – or Jobu, as he was known in everyday life. Jobu was born in 1994 and lived until 2005. He was awarded in Open Class (EK) in hunting tests, was also used for hunting, and was a blood tracking champion. In fact, he placed 3rd in the Norwegian Blood Tracking Championship in 2002! He was a mentally sound and steady male who left a strong and lasting legacy in his family line. Jobu was born in Sweden but lived in Norway.

I am very excited about this combination and hope it will produce lovely dogs that are well suited for hunting and other types of work, while also becoming wonderful companions and family members who will bring joy for many years to come.

This combination has an estimated increase in inbreeding of 0% according to both DogWeb and FlatcoatData, so I hope this litter will make a valuable contribution towards my goal of preserving as much genetic diversity as possible.

However, I would like to add that the genomic coefficient of inbreeding will be considerably higher, as all Flat-Coated Retrievers ultimately descend from the same dogs. Today, the average genomic coefficient of inbreeding in the breed is over 30%, which is far too high. It is therefore important that we try to keep any further increase in inbreeding as low as possible.

This is Wish’s second and final litter, and I am very happy with her first litter, from which I kept Please. She has only competed in one field trial so far, where she was awarded Excellent. She also became Young Dog Champion at the Norwegian Flatcoat Championship in 2024 and placed 11th in the young dog class at the Swedish Flatcoat Championship that same year. One of her litter sisters qualified as a search and rescue dog at just 2.5 years of age, while one of her brothers is training to become a search and rescue dog – and his owner says he is the best dog he has ever had. Her other brother is a great running companion and family dog.

I had very much hoped to keep another daughter from Wish, as I am so incredibly happy with Please and her siblings. But instead, her second and final litter gave me just two boys – and I decided to keep them both!

Wish is also a dog who means an incredible amount to me. She is mentally sound and steady, always ready to work, exceptionally kind and affectionate, and an easy and charming dog to live with.

This is Jobu’s first litter and Wish’s second and final litter.
